₿ / BITCOIN EXPOSURE

Bitcoin ETFs

Understand Bitcoin ETFs and bitcoin-linked ETPs: spot trusts, futures exposure, costs, custody, and the product documents worth reading.

Bitcoin exposure is the starting point

Searching for a Bitcoin ETF does not identify a single investment structure. A spot trust holds bitcoin. A derivatives strategy obtains exposure through contracts. Both can be traded as securities, but their implementation and legal frameworks can differ. Begin by deciding which mechanism you are researching, not by sorting a list of tickers.

Spot bitcoin trusts

U.S. spot bitcoin commodity trusts offer exchange-traded shares associated with a portfolio holding bitcoin. That does not turn an ordinary brokerage position into a personally controlled crypto wallet. Fees, custody, valuation, and the relationship between share price and net asset value remain important. Our IBIT profile provides one selected example, not a recommendation or a complete survey.

Bitcoin-linked futures strategies

Futures contracts introduce maturity, replacement, and collateral questions. A fund’s objective can refer to bitcoin without the portfolio directly holding bitcoin. Read the current instruments and strategy, rather than assuming a name describes everything. The BITO profile illustrates this distinction, and the spot versus futures guide explains the practical research questions.

What a comparison should record

Write down the exact legal vehicle, holdings or exposure method, benchmark, fee definition, and source date. Read the terms governing custody and unusual market or network events. Compare bid–ask spreads and market prices at a relevant moment rather than treating a historical snapshot as an executable quote. The economic risks of bitcoin do not vanish inside a share. Multiple bitcoin-linked funds can still leave a portfolio concentrated in the same underlying driver. Consider overall exposure alongside the product’s operational details.

Build a research sequence

Start with how Bitcoin ETFs work, then explore fees and custody. Use the directory to find the official source for a selected product. The source library includes the SEC’s bitcoin and ether ETP bulletin and its discussion of bitcoin futures funds.
